The Bureau of Topographic and Geologic Survey and the Oil Region Alliance of Business, Industry and Tourism have announced the republication of a special issue of Pennsylvania Geology to celebrate 150th anniversary of the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania. The 32 page magazine—which was originally published in 1998—features articles such as "Why the Drake Well?" by John Harper; "The Origin of Oil," by Christopher Laughrey; and "As the Drill Bit Churns," by Kathy Flaherty. It also contains an article by Samuel Pees discussing "Oil Creek's Riparian Wells," which describes the early efforts of drillers to recover oil from the banks and even "off shore" in Oil Creek. Pennsylvania Geology is a quarterly publication of the Geologic Survey. A free copy of this special issue of Pennsylvania Geology is available online. For more information on the anniversary, a special newsletter, posters and educational resources, visit the Oil 150 website. |
