October 17 Environmental Forum to Examine Emerging Water Contaminants

The Department of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Water Standards and Facility Regulation will host two experts on emerging contaminants at an Environmental Forum to be held October 17 in Harrisburg.

 

Joe Duris from the United States Geological Survey – Michigan Water Science Center, will present research conducted on the occurrence of pathogenic Shiga-toxin producing Escherichia coli and markers of fecal sources in surface water from a 27-station water quality network in Pennsylvania.

 

The research utilizes Polymerase Chain Reaction analysis methods. Occurrence data will be presented in relation to indicator bacteria concentrations, contributing land use, season, and other relevant parameters.

 

In addition, Dr. Ronald MacGillivray, Delaware River Basin Commission, will present the results of a pilot monitoring survey in the mainstem of the tidal Delaware River that sampled and analyzed ambient waters for pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and perfluorinated compounds, hormones, sterols and nonyl phenols and polybrominated diphenyl ethers.

 

The forum will begin at 10 a.m. and end by noon and will be held in the 2nd Floor Auditorium of the Rachel Carson State Office Building, Harrisburg.
