Volunteers Remove Nearly 1,000 Tires from the Susquehanna River In Wyoming County

Staff from the Department of Environmental Protection’s Northeast Regional Office joined community volunteers last weekend to complete a two-year project that removed hundreds of tires from the Susquehanna River in Mehoopany Township, Wyoming County.

Regional employees were joined by members of thePennsylvania Environmental Council, the Wyoming County Conservation District, St. Michael's School and the township in the cleanup. The group removed approximately 300 tires from the river and riverbank.

The tire cleanup project began last year with the removal of more than 900 tires. Low river levels made the 300 tires removed last weekend accessible.

Bob Pitcavage, DEP’s regional local government liaison, coordinated both cleanups. The waste tires are being recycled.
