May 27 would have been Rachel Carson’s 97^th birthday. Many people don’t know this founder of the modern environmental movement called Pennsylvania her home, specifically Springdale near Pittsburgh.

A scientist and author of many award winning books and articles, including the 1962 book Silent Spring about the impacts of pesticides on the environment, Ms. Carson was also a public employee who worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
