PPL EnergyPlus Offers Customers Chance To Help Develop Alternative Energy Facilities

Everyone wants to do their part to fight global warming. Now with the help of a new program from PPL EnergyPlus, you can help create a cleaner, greener future for our planet.

This week PPL EnergyPlus launched the Renewable Choice Program, which allows consumers, businesses and wholesale energy customers to help fund the development of new renewable energy such as wind, landfill-gas or biomass and soon solar projects.

"Climate change is a global issue, but there are small actions we can take that will have a big impact," said Robert D. Gabbard, president of PPL EnergyPlus. "We are offering individuals a simple and effective way to support the development of renewable energy projects and help offset the carbon footprint of their electricity use."

Projects that produce renewable power also generate renewable energy credits (RECs). One REC is created for each megawatt-hour of electricity delivered into the power grid from a renewable energy facility. When customers enroll in the Renewable Choice Program, PPL EnergyPlus purchases and retires RECs on their behalf.

For as little as $7 per month, customers can help increase the development of new renewable energy sources and reduce the country's collective reliance on fossil fuels.

Participation in the program does not mean that customers will receive their electricity from renewable energy sources.

Rather, the RECs that the Renewable Choice Program purchases provide an incentive or additional revenue for developers to build more renewable energy projects, making renewable energy a greater percentage of our country's energy portfolio.

"Every megawatt-hour of clean, renewable energy in the local, regional or national electricity grid means that one less hour of energy is used from traditional sources such as coal, natural gas and oil," Gabbard said.

Under the program, customers have the option to support renewable resources either across the nation, within their region or even within their own communities. The first community-level program will be offered in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Renewable Choice is the third retail product from PPL EnergyPlus. In October 2007, the company began providing natural gas supply and services for commercial and industrial customers throughout the mid-Atlantic. In May 2008, PPL EnergyPlus began offering its customers the opportunity to obtain curtailment and demand response services through Comverge/Enerwise.
