Resources Available To Communities On Sustainable Parks, Recreation Programming
The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has two publications available to help communities develop sustainable parks and recreational programing.

Municipal Recreation Programming: A Resource Guide for Recreation, Parks and Conservation is designed to help a community plan to meet recreation needs, build a program schedule, administer and market programs and evaluate their effectiveness.

Included in the booklet are documents that other municipalities in Pennsylvania have used to survey residents, reach agreements with program providers, collect medical information and waivers, and many other examples.

To get a copy of the booklet, contact the DCNR Bureau of Recreation and Conservation at 717-787-7672 or send email.to: askbrc@state.pa.us

Also available is the 80-page Creating Sustainable Community Parks: A Guide to Improving Quality of Life by Protecting Natural Resources.

The book helps guide communities through incorporating a more naturalistic setting into park design and programming. It includes a review of the costs and benefits of parks, provides a design and maintenance guide, outlines outreach efforts and includes several case studies of parks in Pennsylvania that have included natural resource conservation and sustainability into their practices.
