Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Michael DiBerardinis this week issued a special report outlining the accomplishments of his agency and its partners in 2008. A special message from the Secretary introduced the report--

As 2009 begins, I find myself extremely proud of what we have been able to accomplish over the last six years. Our work is beginning to produce very real results for the conservation of our natural resources and promotion of sustainable communities in Pennsylvania.

I offer just a few examples:

-- At Bald Eagle State Park, we broke ground for our system’s first nature inn to expand our overnight accommodation options and attract new visitors to an outdoor experience;

-- TreeVitalize is expanding from its roots in the southeast into a statewide program with a goal of planting one million trees and educating citizens about caring for them and their role in environmental protection;

-- Work is underway on the Elk Country Visitors Center in the Pennsylvania Wilds that will be the largest elk watching and conservation education center in the eastern United States;

-- We are advancing energy alternatives by greening state parks and the grants program, as well as providing excellent forward-looking reports on sustainable forest biomass harvesting and carbon management;

-- We continue to protect land at a higher rate than any time in decades;

-- We conducted a successful natural gas lease sale that allows energy development and protects the future health of the state forest; and

-- Our work in large landscapes and with county natural inventories and greenway planning are forming real connections with communities and helping them protect and create places that they treasure.

These are only the highlights. This year-end report reflects on our key programs and expands on our accomplishments in 2008.

Although economic circumstances present us with very real challenges, I know that the groundwork that we have laid, and the extremely dedicated DCNR staff that we are fortunate to have, will ensure that our work will remain vibrant in 2009.

Every day we are maintaining our deep commitment to the stewardship of the public lands, to a statewide land conservation approach, to building attractive and sustainable communities and to connecting citizens to the outdoors. We are not only continuing the story of conservation here in
Pennsylvania, but we are adding many pages to the book.

Best wishes for the new year,
