Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy Is Looking For Trash
The Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy is seeking trashy sites within the watershed to include in the 2009 Stream Clean-up Event.

The Perkiomen Watershed is comprised of the Perkiomen Creek and its tributaries (Unami, Swamp, East Branch, and Skippack Creeks) and connects diverse communities throughout the 362 square mile watershed in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

A surprising amount of garbage, rubbish, litter, junk, debris, waste and tires make it into our local waterways each year! It’s tossed out of car windows, blown from yards, trashcans and parking lots, washed away by floods or stormwater, and dumped or left behind on purpose or by accident. However it gets there, it’s TRASH. It’s ugly, it degrades the beauty, safety and quality of the water we drink and play in, and it can be downright deadly to fish, birds and other wildlife.

The PWC’s Annual Stream Clean-up is a regional community event for volunteers to have fun and make a positive difference in the beauty, health and safety of our environment. In 2008 over 500 volunteers rallied to 27 locations throughout the 362-square mile watershed to clean trash and other garbage from our local streams, collecting an amazing 164 tires and overflowing three 20-yard trash dumpsters.

The PWC’s Annual Stream Clean-up Event is scheduled for April 18 in conjunction with Earth Day. Citizens are encouraged to contact the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy with information about trashy locations along a stream or creek within the Perkiomen Watershed.

Please contact the PWC before March 13 so there is time to preview the site and coordinate volunteers. Send email to: streamcleanup@perkiomenwatershed.org or call 610-287-9383 extension 6.
