Thomas W. Beauduy, deputy director and counsel of the Susquehanna River Basin Commission, will discuss the anticipated demand for water in the basin with the development of the Marcellus Shale at 4 p.m. February 2 in 112 Walker Building on the Penn State Campus, State College.
His talk, “Accommodating Another Straw in the Water: Development of the Marcellus Shale Formation in the Susquehanna River Basin,” is open to the public.
The talk also will be available live online.
Beauduy will focus on how much water will be needed to extract the gas in the Marcellus Shale, how that demand compares to overall water demand in the basin and how this new demand can be accommodated. The Marcellus Shale underlines 72 percent of the entire land area of the Susquehanna River basin.
“The presentation [also will cover] how the Susquehanna River Basin Commission is attempting to balance the need to protect the basin’s water resources and simultaneously allow for their utilization to support this important new industry,” Beauduy said.
This is the second in the 2009 EarthTalks Spring Colloquium Series on “The Marcellus Shale Play: Boon or Burden?” and sponsored by the Penn State Earth and Environmental Systems Institute, the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, the College of Agricultural Sciences, the Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment and the EMS Energy Institute.
