Allegheny County Announces Enviro Star Award Winners, Nominations Due For Next Awards
The Allegheny County Health Department has presented more than a dozen local businesses and institutions with Enviro Star awards for voluntarily adopting pollution prevention practices and announced it is accepting nominations for the 2009 awards.
 
Nominations are due March 15.
 
“Pollution prevention not only protects the environment and public health but also benefits a company’s bottom line through waste reduction and conservation of resources,” said County Health Director Dr. Bruce W. Dixon.
 
Enviro Star recipients are awarded one, two or three stars based on their commitment to pollution prevention, with three representing the highest.
 
The recipients for 2007 according to the number of stars awarded were:
 
-- Three Stars -- University of Pittsburgh.
 
-- Two Stars -- American Thermoplastics, U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory, Southwestern Pennsylvania Household Hazardous Waste Task Force, Allegheny County Airport Authority’s Pittsburgh International Airport, St. Clair Hospital, Appliance Warehouse, Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium, Giant Eagle (company-wide), and Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
 
-- One Star – Steel City Biofuels, Landau Buildings, Doubletree Hotel, International Union of Operating Engineers Local Union No. 95, and 22 Giant Eagle stores in Allegheny County.
