Westmoreland County Offers Engineers Workshop On March 5 and 6

The Westmoreland Conservation District will hold a workshop for engineers and anyone involved in the land development and construction process onMarch 5. The same workshop will be repeated on March 6.

 

The workshop will be held at theFred Rogers Center at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe.

 

Workshop participants will see ademonstration of a new computer model that assesses a variety of locally specific factors and then creates the kind of smarter, watershed-based building design. Ken Orie P.E., of Gibson-Thomas Engineering Co., Inc., one of only a few local people currently working with this model, will lead this workshop session.

 

Other new topics covered at the workshop include:

 

-- Putting trees, shrubs, and plants to work controlling erosion and stormwater;

 

-- Creating effective erosion control on large earthwork sites;

-- Fitting your design to the unique features of your site;

 

-- How a state funding program might help you implement green stormwater controls; and

-- Working with municipal officials to get your plans approved.

 

In addition to Orie, scheduled speakers include: Bob Scheib, P.E., Department of Environmental Protection; Larry Gasparato, project specialist, PennVEST; and members of the Westmoreland Conservation District’s Stormwater Advisory Committee and technical staff.

 

Breakout sessions, videos, and a vendor show round out the event, which begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. Optional tours of the Fred Rogers Center, a green building, will be offered from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.

 

The $50 cost of the workshop includes breakfast, lunch, and materials. Seating is limited and registration is required by February 19.
