DOE Motor System “Best Practices” Workshop Set For March 25
Industrial and commercial businesses, institutions, and local government operations can learn to reduce energy consumption while improving system reliability by attending the Department of Energy’s full-day Motor System Management workshop March 25 at the Union County Government Center, 155 North 15th Street, in Lewisburg.

Local government employees are eligible for a 50 percent discount, and attendees may qualify for a DEP grant.

Motor-driven systems account for 64 percent of industrial energy use, consuming nearly 290 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. Motor intensive businesses can achieve dramatic reductions in energy usage through sound energy-management practices.

Plant managers, maintenance staff, engineers, and operations personnel attending the event will improve their understanding of electric motor systems and learn the skills necessary to improve system reliability and efficiency.

DOE’s “Best Practices” workshops provide the latest technical support available and are taught by highly trained and experienced DOE-qualified system specialists. Some of the topics to be addressed during the workshop include the evaluation and selection of the optimum motor for a specific application, motor inventory maintenance and tracking, and guidelines for motor repair and rewind. Electric power systems and management of power transmission and driven loads are also covered relative to motor operation.

The workshop is sponsored by: the SEDA-Council of Governments; the Central PA Workforce Development Corporation; the PA ARC/INFO User Group; the U.S. Department of Energy; and the departments of Labor and Industry, Community and Economic Development, and Environmental Protection.

Eligible workshop participants may also apply for a $1,000 Energy Use-Reduction Grant.
Attendees of each DEP-cosponsored workshop are encouraged to implement a “best practice” from the workshop during a four-month window following the class. Project reports selected as “best in class” by DEP staff will receive a $1,000 grant award. Grant application packets will be available at the workshop. Program details are also available by visiting the Energy Reduction Grant webpage.

To register for the workshop, call Megan Epler at 570-524-4491 or by sending email to: mepler@seda-cog.org. The $100 registration fee includes all workshop training materials, DOE’s Save Energy Now CD containing the full suite of Industrial Technology Program software tools and technical literature, and lunch.
