Stonycreek River Reported On The Mend From Acid Mine Drainage

The Somerset Conservation District recently completed a reassessment of the Stonycreek River indicating the $10 million investment in acid mine drainage abatement projects over the last decade has resulted in substanital improvements.

 

Len Lichvar, District Manager, said the reassessment would provide insight into future needs and provide a baseline for improvements.

 

With acid mine drainage treatment systems online, the district is now uncovering ‘hidden’ contaminates such as nitrates, manure and sewage hazards. Prior to abating the AMD these contaminates were largely masked by the AMD problem.
