Rep. John Pallone (D-Westmoreland) announced this week the House adopted House Resolution 146 to recognize 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. March 28 as Earth Hour 2009 in Pennsylvania.

"The purpose of Earth Hour is to get at least 1 billion households, businesses and landmarks to turn out their lights for that one hour on March 28," Rep. Pallone said. "Every location that is dark would signify a vote for the earth and a demand that policymakers develop a new strategy for dealing with the effects of global warming."

Earth Hour was initiated by the World Wildlife Fund in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, where more than 2 million homes and businesses turned off their lights for one hour. In 2008, more than 50 million participated and the event saw lights out at such landmarks as San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, the Coca Cola billboard in New York City's Times Square, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Rome's Coliseum. As of now, more than 600 cities around the world have promised to participate in Earth Hour 2009.

"We in the Commonwealth should go on record as lending our support to this cause and encourage state and local governments, as well as our residents, to participate in Earth Hour 2009," Rep. Pallone said.
