State Parks Urban Youth Adventure Camps To Benefit From Macy's Promotion

Adventure camps that introduce young people from urban areas to nature and outdoor recreation will benefit from a promotion being held by the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation and Macy's department stores.

 

PPFF President Marci Mowery announced this week anyone making a $5 donation to the foundation will receive $5 off a $15 purchase, as well as an all-day shopping pass worth 20 percent off purchases and 10 percent off home purchases.

 

Passes are good on April 25, at Macy's stores in the southeastern, western and south-central parts of the state.

 

"One hundred percent of the $5 donation will benefit efforts to create the next generation of concerned citizens and stewards of our natural resources through Adventure Camps," Mowery said. "The program gives teens from the city a chance to spend a week during the summer at nearby state parks doing team building exercises, camping, kayaking, fishing, biking and many other activities.

 

"We appreciate Macy's featuring Adventure Camps through its 'One Good Turn Leads to Another' initiative. For some teens, Adventure Camp truly is a life changing experience," Mowery added.

 

Adventure Camp brings together state park and forest staff, and local community partners, such as urban park and recreation centers and Boys & Girls clubs. The program is for urban youth, aged 13-15, who are active participants within the partner organizations.

 

The camps are held in Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Williamsport, Erie, Scranton, Warren, York, and Allentown.

 

"Many state parks are not in urban areas. These partnerships with cities are opening new opportunities to connect our state parks with urban youth," DCNR Bureau of State Parks Director John Norbeck said.

 

"We hope an exciting outdoor adventure will not only make them repeat visitors, but will teach them about diversity in the natural world so they become lifelong stewards and make wise decisions about what our world is like."

Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation is the statewide nonprofit organization that supports Pennsylvania's 117 state parks and 2.1 million acres of forest.
