Audubon PA Seeks Input On Waggoner's Gap Hawk Watch
Photo

Audubon Pennsylvania is seeking feedback about the use and development of the Waggoner's Gap Hawk Watch on the Cumberland-Perry county border north of Carlisle.

According to Kim Van Fleet, important bird area coordinator, 2,615 people visited Waggonerfs Gap in 2007, and 2,706 visited in 2008.

Some of the topics discussed for education programs and outreach materials include ridge and valley physiographic province in Pennsylvania and how it relates to raptor migration from local to statewide levels; raptor identification; general ecology and ecological health of the ridge, both historical and current; geology of the ridge; and land-use practices and other human influences associated with the region from historic to present day.

Among the plans is a trail for self-guided walks with various stops along the way that explain what can be observed at each station.

Volunteers handle the migration counts and submit those numbers to Audubon and the Hawk Migration Association of North America.

Surveys can be picked up at the county commissionersf office on W. Main Street, New Bloomfield, the courthouse lobby in New Bloomfield and the Penn State Cooperative Extension Office on S. Carlisle Street, New Bloomfield.

For information about the survey or organization, contact Audubon Pennsylvania at 717-213-6880.
