Senate Confirms John Hanger as Secretary of Environmental Protection 45-5

Environmental Protection Secretary John Hanger was confirmed by the Senate by a vote of 45 to 5. Senators Earll (R-Erie), Folmer (R-Lebanon), Robbins (R-Mercer), D.White (R-Indiana) and Mary Jo White (R-Venango).
 
Secretary Hanger has served as acting secretary since September 2. In that time he has overseen the continuing establishment of Pennsylvania’s leadership in building and deploying a robust diversity of clean and renewable energy technologies with measurable impacts on pollution reduction, environmental protection, economic growth and enhanced homeland security.
 
From 1993 to 1998, Secretary Hanger was a commissioner with the Public Utility Commission, where he advocated for policies that allow consumer choice that assist low-income families; and those that benefit the environment.
 
As an expert on energy and environmental issues, public utility regulation, and competition in the electricity, gas and telephone industries, Secretary Hanger has testified before the United States Congress and many state legislatures. He has authored numerous articles, written leading regulatory decisions and lectured widely to diverse audiences.
 
Secretary Hanger is a 1979 graduate of Duke University and a 1984 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Law.
