Rep. George Honored By PA Chapter National Association Of Water Companies

The National Association of Water Companies, Pennsylvania Chapter this week recognized Rep.Camille “Bud” George (D-Clearfield) with its James McGirr Kelly Award for Excellence.
The organization honored Rep. George during its awards luncheon at the NAWC Annual Meeting in the Commonwealth Keystone Building in Harrisburg.
 
The James McGirr Kelly Award for Excellence is the highest honor bestowed by NAWC. The industry association presents the award each year to a resident of Pennsylvania who most exemplifies dedication to promoting the availability of safe drinking water in the Commonwealth.
 
“Thanks to Rep. George’s leadership and diligence, Pennsylvania has stronger protections in place to preserve our precious water resources,” said NAWC Chair Kathy L. Pape. “He’s also been a driving force behind the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST), which has been instrumental in providing much-needed funding for drinking water, sewer and storm water projects across the state.”
 
Rep. George was appointed chairman of the House Conservation (now Environmental Resources and Energy) Committee in 1983, and has since transformed it into one of the most powerful standing committees in the General Assembly. As chairman, he has sponsored and authored dozens of environmental initiatives that have earned him and the Commonwealth the well-deserved reputation of leader in the area of environmental protection and natural resource conservation.
 
The Annual Award for Excellence was named for the late James McGirr Kelly, Senior United States District Court Judge for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Judge Kelly was a former member of the Public Utility Commission and former vice president of American Water Works Service Company, Inc. He was the first recipient of the award in 1983.

The NAWC Annual Meeting also featured remarks by Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission Chairman James Cawley, Public Utility Commissioner Kim Pizzingrilli, PENNVEST Deputy Executive Director for Project Management Brion Johnson, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region III Drinking Water Coordinator Patti-Kay Wisniewski and Pennyslvania Department of Environmental Protection Water Program Specialist Deb Rotz.
 
The NAWC represents all aspects of the private water service industry including ownership of regulated drinking water and wastewater utilities and the many forms of public-private partnerships and management contract arrangements.
 
The Pennsylvania Chapter consists of 10 member companies that provide safe and adequate drinking water service to approximately 3.1 million Pennsylvanians in 485 communities in 38 counties. In addition, three member companies provide wastewater service to approximately 155,000 Pennsylvanians in 24 communities in seven counties.
