PA Resources Council Sponsors May 16 Hard To Recycle Collection Event In Pittsburgh
On May 16, Pittsburgh area residents can dispose of a wide variety of materials at the first of four 2009 “hard to recycle” collection events sponsored by the Pennsylvania Resources Council and its campaign partners.

Individuals can drop off televisions, e-waste, cell phones, printer/toner cartridges, compact fluorescent bulbs, alkaline batteries and tires without rims for recycling on May 16, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Allegheny County Health Department, 39th Street and Penn Avenue in Lawrenceville. Fees are charge for electronics and tires; other items collected at no cost.

A new partnership with Global Links will enable area residents to drop off medical equipment and supplies – such as crutches, canes and walkers – at all 2009 PRC collection events at no cost.

“PRC, in partnership with the Allegheny County Health Department, is providing four opportunities to properly dispose of a ‘hard to recycle’ items at collection events,” according to PRC Regional Director Dave Mazza. “This year we’re excited to introduce an opportunity to drop off medical equipment that can be reused at hospitals in Latin America. Annually, Global Links diverts 200 tons of materials that would have been landfilled or incinerated by redirecting home medical materials away from curbside trash cans and into the hands of individuals in need.”

Since 2003, PRC’s collections for hard-to-dispose-of/recycle materials has resulted in the proper disposal or recycling of 950 propane tanks, 5,000 tires, 3,500 appliances, 90 tons of electronics, 30 tons of latex paint, 150 tons of paper and more than 50 tons of phonebooks.

Participant fees for electronics vary and are posted on the PRC website. Cost to dispose of a tire (no rim) is $2.
