Fish & Boat Commission Secures Grant For Pittsburgh Riverfront

The Fish and Boat Commission has been awarded $985,991 in federal funding through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Boating Infrastructure Grant program to construct transient docks on the Allegheny River along the Convention Center Riverfront Park in Pittsburgh.

 

“This is the second time the Commission has successfully secured federal funding of this magnitude for the Pittsburgh area,” PFBC Executive Director Douglas Austen said. “This is a great project for Pennsylvania’s boating program. Building these docks will positively impact tourism and the local economy in the Pittsburgh area for years to come.”

 

The BIG program provides federal funds for projects designed to accommodate transient, recreational motorboats that are 26 feet or longer. The funds awarded to PFBC will be used to construct docking space for 26 large boats, of which 16 will be for transient boaters and day dockage uses.

 

In February 2008, PFBC secured a $1.35 million BIG grant for the construction of transient boat docks along the South Shore Riverfront Park in Pittsburgh. When completed, this facility will consist of a 525-foot tie-up for transient boaters and day dockage uses for up to 17 large, non-trailerable boats.

 

The BIG grants are just a small part of a larger $8.5 million redevelopment effort by the Sports & Exhibition Authority of the City of Pittsburgh.

 

No Commission funds will be used for the development of these projects.
