DEP And Partners To Host Alternative Energy Educator Workshops
The Department of Environmental Protection and its partners, the Department of Education, Juniata College, the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve at St. Vincent College and Westmoreland Conservation District, this week announced a series of three workshops for educators, "Introductory Alternative Energy," to be held on the following dates and locations across the state--

-- June 22 Shuster Hall, Raystown Field Station, Juniata College, near James Creek (located 18 miles south of Huntingdon; in partnership with Juniata College);

-- July 10 Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve at St Vincent College, Latrobe (in partnership with WPNR at St. Vincent College and Westmoreland Conservation District); and

-- July 16 Cumberland County Cooperative Extension Office, Newville.

The workshops, which are available to educators at no cost, will be held from 8:30 a.m.– 4 p.m. (lunch and refreshments included). Teachers will be eligible for 7.0 Act 48 credit hours.

Workshop participants will learn about and explore alternative energy technologies through presentations, hands-on activities and field trips to see alternative energy technology in action. This workshop is geared for upper elementary, middle and high school teachers and non-formal educators and is based upon Pennsylvania’s Academic Standards for Environment and Ecology and Science and Technology.

Educators will receive background information and standards-based curricular materials, including PDE’s Energy "Thinking and Conserving for the Future."

“This workshop is designed to help educators learn about solar and wind energy, energy conservation for schools and alternative transportation fuels that address state mandated academic standards for environment/ecology and science/technology, while focusing on an important, timely and pressing environmental issue,” DEP’s Director of Environmental Education Jack Farster said.

To register for the July 10 workshop at the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve at St. Vincent College, contact Angela Belli, with St. Vincent College, by calling 724-537-5284 or send email to: angela.belli@email.stvincent.edu.
