West Branch Susquehanna Restoration Coalition To Hold 6 Mini-Symposiums, Tours
Photo

The first of six West Branch Susquehanna Mini-Symposiums and Tours is scheduled for July 16 at Duman Lake County Park in Cambria County sponsored by the West Branch Susquehanna Restoration Coalition.

The six mini-symposiums scheduled for this year will take the place of the annual West Branch Susquehanna Restoration Symposium. The five other dates include--

-- August15 - Anderson Creek Watershed;
-- August 21 - Moshannon Creek Watershed;
-- September 19 - Clearfield Creek Watershed; and
-- Babb Creek and Beech Creek Watershed dates to be announced soon!

One of the many things the Coalition learned from Trout Unlimited's Economic Benefit Analysis for Abandoned Mine Drainage Remediation is that not enough people living in the West Branch Susquehanna watershed realize the severity of our AMD-problems. These mini-symposiums are the Coalition's first step in battling this AMD-Apathy.

As part of this free, day-long event, experts will address the history of local coal mining, the effects of abandoned coal mine drainage on local economies and the environment, and present regional reclamation projects. In addition, attendees will have an opportunity to hear how one municipality has successfully partnered with citizen groups to clean up mine pollution.

Lunch will include a guided photo tour of abandoned mine drainage pollution throughout the West Branch watershed followed by a bus tour of local abandoned coal mine sites and treatment systems. This is your opportunity to visit the Barnes & Tucker Treatment Site, the Barnes & Tucker Treatment Plant location, and the location where the Barnes & Watkins pile was located!

For those attending the Abandoned Mine Reclamation Conference at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown on July 16, the Coalition will be providing a bus that will shuttle participants from Johnstown to Duman Lake County Park for this informative program and then back to Johnstown at the end of the day.

This program will qualify for Act 48 teacher credits.  A full agenda can be downloaded from the WBSRC website.
Space is limited on the bus to the first 50 attendees so reserve your seat now by calling our office at 570-748-4901 or send email to: info@wbsrc.org.
