Westmoreland Conservation District Invites Public To 60th Anniversary Open House

In October 1949, a group of determined area farmers petitioned the Westmoreland County commissioners and successfully got their wish: The creation of a conservation district in Westmoreland County to help them conserve the rich agricultural soils that formed the foundation of their livelihoods.

As the county has grown and changed in the six decades since then, the Westmoreland Conservation District has responded in kind, adding new programs for managing stormwater; restoring streams and land damaged by past coal mining; controlling erosion and sediment; stewarding forests and woodlots; and encouraging sustainable communities.

This year, the Westmoreland Conservation District is celebrating 60 years of helping farmers and a wide variety of others, from earthmovers to homeowners, use our natural resources wisely.

To mark this landmark anniversary, the Westmoreland Conservation District is inviting the public to join them for a free “60th Anniversary Celebration Open House” on September 11 at their restored barn headquarters on Donohoe Road in Greensburg.

Visitors are invited to drop in anytime between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. that day to enjoy:

“Then and Now” displays of farm equipment and conservation artifacts, an illustrated timeline of local conservation history, highlighting not only the District’s achievements but also the individual and partnership efforts of many other conservation organizations throughout the region, light refreshments, fun activities, free chance to win prizes and free tree seedlings to the first 100 attendees.
