Joe Humphreys To Be Awarded 6th Annual Spring Creek Heritage Award
Joe Humphreys, local fly fishing luminary and watershed conservationist, will receive the 6th Annual Spring Creek Heritage Award at the ClearWater Conservancy’s Spring Creek Day Family Festival on October 4.

The Award is sponsored by the Spring Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited and the ClearWater Conservancy and recognizes local individuals that have demonstrated lifelong dedication to the protection of Spring Creek and its natural resources.

Joe Humphreys is a nationally known fly fisherman, conservationist, author, and educator. He has been a fishing instructor to both common folks and VIPs for over forty years. His pupils have included former President Jimmy Carter, Vice President Richard Cheney, basketball-coaching legend Bobby Knight, and many others.

Mr. Humphreys has authored numerous classic and well-respected books and articles on the sport of fly fishing, and he is a regular contributor to regional and national journals and periodicals. Mr. Humphreys is nationally known as one of the foremost educators in angling; for nineteen years, he directed the angling program at the Pennsylvania State University, providing introduction and foundation to young and old for a life-long enjoyment of this sport.

His students have become the advocacy base that central Pennsylvania waters will always require. In addition to his work as a clinician for Fenwick-Woodstream, Cortland Line Co., and the Allenberry Resort, he has lectured throughout the United States enhancing the reputation of Pennsylvania fishing.

Joe Humphreys may be internationally renowned, but he is deeply committed to preserving his home watershed. In 1980, he was presented with the Thompson Award for his efforts to ensure that Spring Creek remains a viable and a significant contributor to Pennsylvania’s fishing legacy. Joe Humphreys also founded the Spring Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited, an organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the Spring Creek watershed.

“For all that Joe has meant over the years as a mentor, teacher, and friend to our organizations, ClearWater Conservancy and the Spring Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited are honored to be able to recognize Joe in this way,” stated Jennifer Shuey, ClearWater Conservancy Executive Director. “Please come out to the Spring Creek Day Family Festival at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center on Sunday to join us in congratulating Joe and wishing him well.”

The event runs from noon – 5 pm, and the Spring Creek Heritage Award will be given at 2:15 p.m.
