November 21 Hard To Recycle Collection Event In Pittsburgh

In recognition of America Recycles Week, The Mall at Robinson– in partnership with the Pennsylvania Resources Council and Allegheny County Health Department – will host a “hard to recycle” collection event on November 21, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

During this time, individuals can drop off major appliances (Freon and non-Freon appliances including refrigerators, air conditioners, washers, dryers, etc.), electronics (televisions, computer monitors, CPUs, printers, fax machines, copiers, stereos, VCRs), tires (without rims), mixed paper (junk mail, magazines, catalogs, newspapers and office paper), corrugated cardboard, ink cartridges, CFLs, alkaline batteries, and cell phones for recycling. Fees are charge for appliances, electronics and tires; other items collected at no cost.

This year a new partnership with Global Links enables area residents to drop off medical equipment and supplies – such as crutches, canes and walkers – at no cost.

The event will take place at The Mall at Robinson, 100 Robinson Center Drive, in the lower level parking lot near Sears and Dick’s Sporting Goods.

The November 21 event wraps up the 2009 “hard to recycle” campaign sponsored by PRC and its partners – and marks the first opportunity this year for individuals to dispose of major appliances.

“Now’s the perfect time to dispose of that outdated refrigerator in the basement or broken air conditioner,” according to PRC Regional Director Dave Mazza. “A second refrigerator in the basement or garage may come in handy at the holidays, but the annual electric bill to operate a refrigerator built before 1993 can cost up to three times as much as operating a new energy efficient model.”

Thus far in 2009, campaign organizers have collected approximately 22 tons of electronics. PRC partners with eLoop llc, a local e-waste recycler recently added to the Basal Action Network’s list of e-stewards, to recycle the electronics.
