Volunteers Help Clean Up Two Illegal Dump Sites In Bedford County
Thirty-three dedicated volunteers helped eliminate two illegal dumpsites in Broad Top Township, Bedford County, this fall during two separate volunteer efforts, according to PA CleanWays.

The first cleanup was held on September 19 along a medium-sloped stretch of Martin Farm Road. Volunteers collected 120 bags, or approximately 1.2 tons, of illegally dumped trash and 28 tires. The volunteers were comprised of local volunteers and members of the Broad Top Township Volunteer Cleanup Committee and PA CleanWays of Bedford County.

In addition, Broad Top Township donated hauling and disposal. Cleanup funding was provided by the Utilities Programs, United States Department of Agriculture.

The second cleanup was held along Six Mile Run Road on November 4 with employees from the REI Bedford Distribution Center. REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) worked impressively and cohesively to collect 2.27 tons trash and 1.44 tons of tires, plus another estimated ton of bagged trash, a couch, and some rusted metal.

WSI Sandy Run Landfill, Inc. donated disposal of 2.27 tons of trash, and Broad Top Township donated hauling and disposal of the rest. The tires were recycled at Penn Turf, Inc. in Hollidaysburg.

Cleanup funding was also provided by REI. Across the country, REI partners with non-profit conservation and outdoor organizations through education, volunteerism, gear donations, and financial contributions.

A total of 132 volunteer hours were donated to both cleanups. And while both illegal dumpsites are currently clean, vigilant monitoring and secured adoptions of these sites will be needed to ensure that they remain clean.
