Marcellus Shale Coalition Supports Responsible Natural Gas Development In PA
The Marcellus Shale Coalition this week underscored its commitment to economic development, environmental protection, and best management practices in the responsible development of Pennsylvania's vast natural gas resources.

"There are a lot of groups and organizations interested in learning more about the Marcellus Shale -- beyond the vast economic opportunities, to include an understanding of the best management practices and further refinements that can allow the Commonwealth to develop the resource in balance with the environment.

Our commitment extends beyond dialogue and includes our willingness to sit down and share best practices, tour our various development sites, and explain the proven, state-of-the-art technologies employed in Pennsylvania. Our organization and member companies have participated in more than 500 educational outreach events across Pennsylvania over the last year and will increase those efforts in 2010 and beyond.

Pennsylvania has among the most detailed and thorough regulatory structures in the United States. The companies committed to responsibly developing the Marcellus Shale work with the Department of Environmental Protection and other regulatory agencies to share national best practices that strengthen environmental and operational safeguards. Pennsylvania currently leads the nation in water recycling and reuse technologies in the field of natural gas development from shales, and it's our goal to continue in a leadership capacity.

Drilling levels are expected to increase and will continue for decades to come. We recognize the need to partner with all interested stakeholders who share our common goal to produce cleaner-burning fuels in balance with environmental excellence.

Efforts are also underway across Pennsylvania to train and develop the long-term, local work force that will fuel natural gas development for generations. In time, the Marcellus could help to create hundreds of thousands of new jobs in Pennsylvania."

The newly named Marcellus Shale Coalition announced plans in November to establish itself as an independent, non-profit organization to represent the Marcellus Shale natural gas industry in Pennsylvania. The organization will announce the hiring of a new President in early 2010 with a Pennsylvania-based headquarters to focus solely on the responsible development of the Marcellus Shale.
