Five high schools in northcentral Pennsylvania recently competed in the GreenSylvania School Recycling Competition.

The GreenSylvania program is aimed at Pennsylvania public and non-public K-12 schools and assists with implementing or enhancing school recycling programs by generating enthusiasm among students, staff and faculty for recycling at school, home and special events.

A total of 3,870 pounds was diverted from the landfill and recycled during the competition. The winning school, Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech, was awarded a recycled office paper plaque.

At right is the plaque that reads, “Congratulations Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech, 2009 GreenSylvania School Recycling Champion, Presented by Bloomsburg Recycling Center in recognition of winning the first school paper recycling competition.”

Competing schools included Beaver Main Elementary, Central Columbia Elementary, Central Columbia Middle School, Central Columbia High School, and Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech.

The winner was determined by dividing the weight of all paper delivered from a school during the month of October 2009 and dividing it by the population of the school to determine a per capita amount.

The competition currently is being done on a county by county basis with plans to become a state wide competition.

Any school interested in competing next year should contact Charles Fritz, Bloomsburg Recycling Coordinator, at 570-784-4532 for details.
