Two Illegal Dump Sites Cleaned Up In Northumberland County
PA CleanWays recently hired a contractor to remove additional waste and tires from two illegal dumpsites that volunteers started cleaning earlier last year in Northumberland County
Bunker Hill Ball Field in Coal Township and Hickory Corners II in Lower Mahanoy Township both contained large and difficult to remove debris that was trapped in the vegetation on steep banks and littered on the forest floors.
In December 2009, nearly 6 tons of waste, 336 tires, and almost 14 tons of scrap metal were pulled from these sites, sorted, and then properly disposed and recycled. Both sites will naturally re-vegetate and adopters are being sought to help maintain the areas as clean.
Cleanup funding was provided by the Rural Utilities Service Program, United States Department of Agriculture.
