DCNR's TreeVitalize Benefits From Plow & Hearth Campaign To Reforest America

TreeVitalize got a great holiday gift this season, through the Plow and Hearth Campaign to Reforest America. The company pledged to donate a seedling for every transaction completed between October 15 and December 31 to programs in three states.
Based on higher than expected sales, the company will donate over 729,000 seedlings to be planted in Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Louisiana.
Thirty-nine percent of customers that participated chose to send their seedling to Pennsylvania in support of the TreeVitalize program. This effort allows seedlings to be planted along streams to aid in providing clean water and restored habitats for trout and other stream life. That surpassed the 31 percent for Louisiana, and 30 percent directing seedlings to North Carolina.
Responding to an alarming trend of the loss of trees in Pennsylvania’s metropolitan areas, TreeVitalize is a public-private partnership to help restore tree cover, educate citizens about planting trees as an act of caring for our environment, and build capacity among local governments to understand, protect and restore their urban trees.
Launched in 2004 in southeastern Pennsylvania, TreeVitalize achieved its goal of planting 20,000 trees in that five-county region. In spring 2008, TreeVitalize expanded to the Pittsburgh region; in fall 2008 and throughout 2009 was launched in metropolitan areas statewide.
Tree-lined streets make communities look great, and they also clean the air, provide shade to cool buildings and paved areas, increase property values and help control stormwater.
With its expansion statewide, TreeVitalize hopes to plant one million trees across the Commonwealth in the next five years.
