GreenSylvania School Recycling Competition To Go Statewide In 2011
Photo

Through a generous sponsorship from Keep America Beautiful, next year's GreenSylvania school recycling program will become a statewide competition for all schools throughout the Commonwealth in 2011, according to the Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania.

GreenSylvania is PROP's recycling competition for K-12 schools - public, private, and home schools!  It's a program that challenges registered schools to learn who can recycle the most paper during a given period of time.
The results are calculated per capita so even the smallest schools can compete with the larger ones.  GreenSylvania is a great way to get students and teachers excited about recycling.
Lackawanna County had the first official pilot program and organizers learned so much from them that in 2009, schools in Centre, Columbia, and Lawrence Counties conducted GreenSylvania trial competitions.
Some of the Centre County schools received media attention as seen in this short news clip featuring the students.
It is easy for schools to get involved in GreenSylvania, especially if they already have a recycling program; however, participation is not limited to those schools with recycling programs. As a matter of fact, it is more important for schools that might be struggling with establishing a program to get involved in GreenSylvania.
