Bethlehem Authority Receives Grant From Pocono Forest And Waters Landscape Initiative

The Bethlehem Authority was recently approved to receive a $20,000 grant from the Pocono Forest and Waters Conservation Landscape Initiative through its Conservation Assistance Program—a funding program administered by the Pennsylvania Environmental Council, in conjunction with DCNR’s Growing Greener Environmental Stewardship Fund. The grant is one of 16 given out by PEC for a total outlay of $98,000 throughout the CLI.
The authority will use its share to offset costs associated with the development of a certifiable forest management plan, to be conducted by The Nature Conservancy through its “Working Woodlands” program. Once the plan is complete and the watershed forests are certified sustainable by the Forest Stewardship Council, the timber that is harvested will have better market access and higher market value.
The Bethlehem Authority owns approximately 23,000 acres of mostly forested watershed property in Carbon and Monroe counties. The mountain reservoirs and watersheds at Wild Creek and Penn Forest, as well as the Tunkhannock Creek backup supply near Long Pond, serve as the water supply for Bethlehem’s water system which serves approximately 115,000 people in Bethlehem and 10 surrounding municipalities.
