Joint Conservation Committee Hears Marcellus Shale Issues From Cooperative Extension

The Joint Legislative Air and Water Pollution Control and Conservation Committee Environmental Issues Forum heard a presentation this week on Marcellus Shale natural gas issues from the Penn State Cooperative Extension.
Tom Murphy, from the Extension, gave the Committee an overview of Marcellus Shale drilling, the potential production from this formation and reviewed the impacts of drilling in the field. He noted the Marcellus Shale field is the second largest natural gas play in the world. In Pennsylvania, the most permits have been issued in Tioga, Lycoming, Bradford and Washington counties.
Murphy said 50 companies have been interested in developing Marcellus Shale in the Commonwealth and have so far spent between $6 and $8 billion. That amount is expected to increase to $55 billion by 2014.
