Earth Day: Volunteers Needed For April 8 Westmoreland Cleanup

Area adults are invited to lace up their boots, put on their work gloves, and join the Westmoreland Land Trust and Westmoreland Cleanways for a cleanup of the “Cabin Hill” property on April 8 beginning at 8:30 a.m.
This parcel of mature woods on North Main Street in Greensburg is one of four properties acquired last fall by the Westmoreland Land Trust, a nonprofit organization formed in late 2007 to conserve land of special value in Westmoreland County.
The cleanup is being organized to remove trash – mostly light- to moderate-weight household items and some tires – that has collected on the property. The cleanup is a necessary first step toward the land trust’s goal of making the property accessible to the public for low-impact uses including hiking, bird-watching, photography, and botanizing.
The Westmoreland Land Trust acquired the 3-1/2-acre property in late 2009 because it provides scenic relief in an urban area and because there are several other wooded parcels around it, which combine to create a significant open space.
The cleanup is expected to conclude by noon, but adults interested in volunteering do not have to stay the entire morning. All are invited to participate for whatever length of time fits their schedule.
