Earth Day: Celebrate Earth Day At The Wissahickon Creek Clean Up April 24

Clean water is serious business. We know that 75 percent of the world is covered by water, but only 1 percent of that water is drinkable. We also know that all water runs downhill, so whatever happens upstream affects everything that happens downstream.
That is why the Friends of the Wissahickon and the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association are celebrating Earth Day by joining together to clean the Wissahickon Creek from top to bottom on April 24 from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
This spring marks the 40th anniversary of both Earth Day and the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association’s annual Creek Clean Up. While members of FOW have always pitched in to help with the Creek Clean Up, this is the first year that the two groups will partner together to clean all 21 miles of the Wissahickon Creek.
Volunteers of all ages will clean the creek, the surrounding trails, and the many tributaries of the Wissahickon Creek. Armed with bags, volunteers will be assigned to sections of the creek to collect anything from plastic bags and swing sets, to mattresses and tires.
Following the clean up, all volunteers are invited to WVWA’s Talkin’ Trash picnic in Fort Washington State Park, with food provided by Whole Foods Market of North Wales. The pavilion is located on Mill Road in Flourtown.
In 2010, the Creek Clean Up’s Presenting Sponsor, Merck & Co., celebrates its 50th Anniversary as a supporter of WVWA. Merck employees have been participating in the clean up since its inception.
Another key sponsor is Dow Chemical, a leader in helping to address the global water crisis. Joining Dow as Environmental Sponsors are MSS Movers Specialty Services, Cognis Corporation, Whole Foods North Wales, and North Wales Water Authority.
Additional sponsorship support comes from AD Marble & Company, Aqua Pennsylvania, Briggs, Bunting & Dougherty, Caddick Construction, Collegeville Pit Stop, Manufacturer’s Golf and Country Club, North Penn Water Authority, O’Brien & Gere Engineers, Inc., The Philadelphia Cricket Club, the Rotary Club of Blue Bell, and Russell Roofing.
Sponsorship support also comes from Catanzaro Insurance & Financial Services and Toth Bros. Clearing & Dredging, Inc.
To help out in Montgomery County, all volunteers must be pre-assigned a section of the Wissahickon Creek to clean. Please contact Bob Adams, WVWA Director of Stewardship, at 215-646-8866 ext. 14 or send email to:  bob@wvwa.org.
To work in Philadelphia, meet at the pavilion along Forbidden Drive, a short distance south of the intersection of Forbidden Drive, Northwestern Ave., and Thomas Road. Parking is available along Northwestern Ave. and other nearby streets, but limited. Volunteers are encouraged to bike or carpool to the event.
Please register by contacting FOW Volunteer Coordinator Kevin Groves at 215-247-0417 ext. 105 or send email to: groves@fow.org.
