This year we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, the nationwide teach-in that kick-started many of the major environmental programs we have today. PA Environmental Heritage
In December 1999 the General Assembly and Gov. Ridge passed the largest single investment in restoring and protecting Pennsylvania environment-- the $648 million Growing Greener Program. 21 people died in Donora, Pa when an air inversion trapped harmful industrial air pollutants close to the ground in this Monongahela River valley community. The episode resulted in passage of the first state Air Pollution Control law in 1959.
In 1961 116,280 fish were killed in the Susquehanna River from a mine discharge from the Glen Alden Mining Corp. The discharge resulted in a $45,000 settlement to the PA Fish Commission, the largest settlement at that time in the U.S.
