Joint Committee Forum Features Illegal Dumping, Littering Issues

Presentations by PA CleanWays and the Center for Rural Pennsylvania highlighted the issue of illegal dumping in the Commonwealth during the Environmental Issues Forum sponsored by the Joint Legislative Air and Water Pollution Control and Conservation Committee this week.

Shannon Reiter, Executive Director of PA CleanWays-Keep PA Beautiful, said her group completed illegal dumping surveys in 37 counties identifying over 4,158 dumpsites containing 14,493 tons of trash.
Since 1990, Pa CleanWays has sponsored cleanups around the state by volunteers and dozens of local government, business and agency partners resulting in the cleanup of 11,634 tons of trash
Reiter said what is needed to prevent illegal dumping are three things: access to convenient and affordable trash disposal and recycling, comprehensive environmental education in schools and a common inspiring message.
Jonathan Jonson of the Center for Rural Pennsylvania provided a more in-depth look at the statistics gathered as part of the county surveys.
A copy of the presentation is available online.
Rep. Scott Hutchinson (R-Venango) serves as Chair of the Committee and Sen. Ray Musto (D-Luzerne) serves as vice Chair.
