DCNR Seeking Volunteers To Plant Trees At LeTort Park In Carlisle May 8

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is looking for volunteers to help plant 380 tree seedlings along LeTort Spring Run at LeTort Park in Carlisle beginning at 9 a.m. on May 8, according to Secretary John Quigley. The park is located at 260 East Pomfret St.
The new trees will create a streamside buffer that will help protect water quality and improve the park’s beauty, Secretary Quigley said.
“Whether it is a rural, suburban or urban setting, there is always value in adding trees to the landscape,” Secretary Quigley said. “These seedlings planted at LeTort Park will grow to help prevent runoff into the waterway, shade the water to make it cooler, and beautify the park, which is a great source of recreation for city residents and especially children.”
The trees will be planted—rain or shine—in an area known as the “WITF Woodland,” which was made possible by donations to the public broadcast station.
“In addition to all the environmental improvements, these plantings are being made possible through a terrific partnership with WITF, which gave its listeners an option of not only donating to public radio, but also helping to conserve and improve the natural resources in their own community through the TreeVitalize program,” Secretary Quigley added.
TreeVitalize is an initiative to plant one million trees in metropolitan areas in Pennsylvania by 2012 to turn around an alarming loss of tree cover over the past several decades. More than 190,000 trees have been planted, to date.
Anyone who volunteers will be eligible to win a rain barrel in a raffle following the planting. Citizens can register online under “TreeVitalize Events.”
Volunteers should bring gloves, shovels, buckets for watering, a sledge hammer for pounding stakes, a pocket knife, and shears if they have them. The Home Depot in Carlisle is donating some materials for use by the volunteers.
DCNR and WITF are also partnering with Carlisle Parks and Recreation, the Carlisle School District, Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay and Dickinson College Alliance for Aquatic Resource Monitoring to make the plantings possible.
The volunteer opportunity is being coordinated with the 3rd annual LeTort Festival sponsored by Dickinson that begins with official remarks at the park at 11 a.m. The festival will include live entertainment, food, a kid’s zone and an environmental education area.
