Southwest HHW Task Force Collects 2 Millionth Pound Of Household Chemicals

The Southwestern PA Household Hazardous Waste Task Force celebrated a milestone at its May 1 collection event: accepting the 2 millionth pound of household chemicals since launching the effort seven years ago.
Since 2003, event organizers have now collected and safely disposed of more than 2 million pounds of household hazardous waste at 40 drive-thru collections held in eight counties. More than 22,000 households have participated in the events. A certified contractor processes the hazardous wastes for proper disposal, and materials may be recycled, incinerated or safely buried in special landfills.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, an average home can easily accumulate 100 pounds of common chemicals referred to as “household hazardous waste.” These household products include cleaners, paints, stains and varnishes, car batteries, automotive fluids, pesticides, pool chemicals and other products containing potentially hazardous ingredients.
The May 1 collection at North Park in Allegheny County was the first of five events in 2010 to be sponsored by the Southwestern PA Household Hazardous Waste Task Force, Allegheny County Health Department, UPMC, NewsRadio 1020 KDKA and other private and public sector partners.
Collection Event Schedule
Additional collections events in 2010 will take place in Cambria County-- May 22, Venango County-- July 31, Allegheny County/Monroeville Mall-- September 18 and Beaver County-- October 2.
The Task Force, formed in 2001 and administered by the Pennsylvania Resources Council, secures funding, organizes events, provides education and creates a partnership of individuals representing governmental, private and public organizations.
