Reforestation Opportunity For Abandoned Mine Lands

Reforestation efforts are increasing throughout the country as well as in Pennsylvania's coal regions. On abandoned mine lands in particular, the Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative is just one example of how private industry works with local groups and governments to re-establish forests in areas that had been negatively affected by past mining activities.
Reforestation projects not only provide sinks for carbon (carbon sequestration) to offset carbon dioxide production, but also restore vital habitats that are essential to a host of wildlife species. In this week's Abandoned Mine Post, we're sharing with you, a reforestation opportunity.
Recently, RRI Energy, a Houston, Texas-based company (formerly Reliant Energy) which owns and operates a portfolio of power generation facilities in Pennsylvania and seven other states, has expressed interest in funding a reforestation project in Pennsylvania.
They are searching for one or more suitable tracts of land to conduct a reforestation project (totaling approximately 500 acres) with the carbon credits for the reforestation project being retained by RRI Energy.
The project should have multiple benefits (wildlife habitat restoration or enhancement, water quality improvements, erosion control, public recreation opportunities, etc.) There are some specific requirements for this project, for example, the landowner or easement holder is responsible to implement a qualified forest management plan.
RRI Energy is partnering with RPM Ecosystems, Inc., the Foundation for Pennsylvania Watersheds, and a host of other partners in this reforestation effort.
To find out more about this effort or if you know of land that may be a suitable candidate for this project, please contact: Leslie Carrere, RPM Ecosystems, LLC, 2150 Dryden Road, PO Box 6, Dryden, NY 13053. Phone: 607-844-9590 or Toll Free at: 888-776-9590
