2.5 Million Pounds Of Household Hazardous Waste Collected In Southeast Events In 2009

In 2009 over 2.5 million pounds of hazardous waste, including 1,361,722 pounds of e-waste was collected in the counties in the Southeastern PA Household Hazardous Waste Program comprised of Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery Counties along with the City of Philadelphia in 26 extremely successful one-day HHW Collection Events.
And 2010 once again appears to be off to a good start.  Six events have been held so far this year and our vendor has accepted 743,076 lbs. of hazardous waste.  As part of our vendor’s requirement, as much of the waste that can be recycled, must be with items such as oil being re-refined for reuse.
On April 24, in celebration of Earth Day/Week Delaware and Montgomery Counties along with the City of Philadelphia, each held HHW Collection Events.  On that day, 3,545 households helped us celebrate by participating in one of three Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events.
The Southeastern Regional Counties are extremely proud of this coordinated effort and the record 423,186 pounds of hazardous waste that was brought on this day for responsible disposal.
The counties are confident that April 24 sets a record not only for the region but for the state as well, for removing the largest amount of hazardous waste on any one day.
With twenty-one remaining 2010 events, the counties of Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery as well as the City of Philadelphia expect to break last year’s 2.5M pound plus record.
This highly successful program is funded in part by the Department of Environmental Protection, public and private sector companies.  The county hazardous waste coordinators and DEP meet monthly to recap most recent events; share information on some of the unusual items that make their way to our events; and what can be done to further develop the program.  The group is committed to improve quality of life issues.
