Hornaman Bill Would Open Door To Wind Energy On Lake Erie

House Bill 2342 (Hornaman-D-Erie), which would open the door for the harnessing of wind energy via off-shore wind turbines in Lake Erie, was passed by the House this week and now goes to the Senate for consideration.

The Commonwealth owns the land under Lake Erie to the Canadian border. Rep. Hornaman's legislation would allow Pennsylvania to lease that space to potential wind development companies.
"Besides the obvious environmental benefits of clean, alternative energy, this project will help provide price stability to consumers as electric rate caps expire," Rep. Hornaman said. "The new technology will also establish new well-paying jobs in manufacturing turbine components, the construction of the turbines on site and the building of special lake vessels needed to accomplish this feat."
Rep. Hornaman said stakeholders from every facet – from tourism and fishing to environmental and shipping – are being consulted on the project, so as not to disrupt the beautiful Presque Isle ecosystem, or the lake itself.
"This is an incredible opportunity to proceed down that road to renewable alternative energy, a road that is a win-win for everyone – the consumers, the workers and the planet," Rep. Hornaman said.
