Tom Ridge Environmental Center Earns Green Building Certification

The Tom Ridge Environmental Center is being awarded the prestigious LEED Silver Certification established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute. A plaque celebrating the achievement was presented at the Presque Isle Advisory Committee meeting at TREC on May 20.
LEED is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. TREC achieved LEED certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies.
By using less energy and water, the TREC building saves money for taxpayers, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and contributes to a healthier environment for residents, workers and the larger community.
“Throughout our state park and forest systems we are making great attempts to ‘practice what we preach’ by designing green buildings and using environmentally sensitive maintenance practices, as well as encouraging others to do the same through our community park grant program,” DCNR Secretary John Quigley said. “We are proud to achieve this certification for TREC and hope that is also serves as an example for others.”
