Volunteers Needed For June 19 Western PA River Sweep

Volunteers are needed for River Sweep 2010, a river and streambank cleanup, scheduled for June 19 along the shorelines of the Ohio, Allegheny, Monongahela, Redbank and Beaver rivers and their tributaries in Western Pennsylvania.
"We are celebrating our 20th anniversary of this extraordinary volunteer event,” said Betsy Mallison, Pennsylvania River Sweep Coordinator.  “We have seen the water quality in our rivers dramatically improve over the last two decades, but still more work is needed.  We are still seeing trash and debris left behind by river users and midnight dumpers.”
Volunteers are needed from 8 a.m. to noon on June 19 to help pick up trash along Western Pennsylvania’s riverbanks.  Cleanups are scheduled in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Clarion, Washington and Westmoreland Counties.
The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission sponsors the River Sweep in partnership with industries, such as PPG Industries Foundation, Duquesne Light Company, Neville Chemical Company, Talisman Energy USA, Inc., Babst, Calland, Clements and Zomnir, P.C., Koppers, and the Dominion Foundation.  Giant Eagle, Inc. provides refreshments for volunteers and regional landfills provide disposal for the collected trash.
Each volunteer will receive a River Sweep t-shirt. Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to call 800-359-3977 or check the ORSANCO website for cleanup site locations.
