National Mine Reclamation Conference Features Intro To USGS Watershed Information

The 32nd Annual National Association of Abandoned Mine Land Programsin Scranton on September 19-22 will feature a presentation on USGS watershed characterization software and databases. Lee W. Eicholtz, Hydrologic Technician, Marla H. Stuckey, Hydrologist and Linda F. Zarr, Computer Assistant, from the USGS Pennsylvania Water Science Center will do the presentation.
The USGS Pennsylvania Water Science Center investigates the occurrence, quantity, quality, distribution, and movement of surface and underground waters throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and disseminates data and results of interpretive studies to the public, State and local governments, public and private utilities, and other Federal agencies. Internet access to this information is available through a variety of databases and software including the following:
StreamStats, a web-based Geographic Information System, provides streamflow statistics, drainage-basin characteristics, and other information for user-selected sites on streams.
National Water Information System Mapper provides access to water quantity and quality data from over 53,000 surface and groundwater sites in Pennsylvania. NWIS includes a map of all sites with links to available water data for individual sites.
WaterWatch provides a map that shows the location of more than 300 long-term USGS streamgages in Pennsylvania and displays maps, graphs, and tables describing real-time, recent, and past streamflow conditions. WaterQualityWatch provides access to real-time water-quality monitor data including water temperature, specific conductance, pH, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity. It also provides real-time streamflow data. Groundwater Watch groups related wells and data from the USGS Groundwater Site Inventory. This database contains records for about 34,000 wells in Pennsylvania that have been compiled over the past 100 years. Groundwater Recharge provides maps and tables showing estimated groundwater recharge rates for 197 watersheds in Pennsylvania.
