Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad Commissions Ultra Low Emission Locomotive

The Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad this week held a commissioning ceremony for a new, ultra-low-emission, "GenSet" locomotive at locomotive shop in Butler this week.

Built through a public-private partnership among the Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Transportation and Brookville Equipment Corporation, the new GenSet locomotive uses two smaller, computer-controlled diesel engines in place of the single, large diesel engine in a typical railroad locomotive.
By starting the second diesel engine only when needed, a GenSet locomotive significantly reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.
Speakers include U.S. Rep. Glenn W. Thompson Jr.; Sen. Donald White (R-Indiana); Rep. Brian Ellis (R-Butler); Pa. Department of Transportation Secretary Allen D. Biehler; Southwestern Pennsylvania Corporation President and CEO James Hassinger; Butler County Board of Commissioners Chairman A. Dale Pinkerton; Butler City Councilman Richard Schontz Jr.; Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad President Raymond A. Goss; and Genesee & Wyoming President and CEO John C. Hellmann.
