Rep. Sturla Calls For Volunteers For Annual Conestoga Cleanup September 11

Rep. Mike Sturla (D-Lancaster) is inviting the community to help him and local organizations in his annual cleanup of the Conestoga River from 8:30 a.m. to noon September 11. This year's event is part of United Way's Day of Caring.
Volunteers will meet up at Reigart's Landing, Lancaster County Park, Chesapeake and Strawberry streets. Helpers are advised to bring their own work gloves and wear long pants.
"I'm encouraging people of all ages to come out and help with this year's cleanup," Sturla said. "I think community service is an excellent way to commemorate Patriot Day, and the more help we have the more we can accomplish."
The annual cleanup is sponsored by Sturla, along with the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority, the city of Lancaster, Franklin & Marshall College and Lancaster Laboratories. Refreshments will be provided by United Way on the McCaskey High School lawn following the cleanup.
As a member of the Chesapeake Bay Commission, Sturla regularly monitors how the Conestoga River feeds the Chesapeake Bay. The cleanup will target an area of the Conestoga River that has been designated a prototype of the Greenway Project. The project is a proposed network of protected areas near the waterways of Lancaster County that will be used for recreational and ecological events for local residents.
Rep. Sturla has introduced legislation-- House Bill 495-- this session that would establish a state "Adopt-A-River" program to help restore Pennsylvania's rivers, spark interest in volunteerism and conserve natural resources. The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources would administer the program. The bill is currently in the House Environmental Resources and Energy Committee.
Residents can volunteer for the cleanup by contacting Nate Bomberger in Sturla's district office at 717-295-3157 or send email to: nbomberger@pahouse.net.
