Penncrest High School Places 14th In National Envirothon, But Gets 5th Place Awards

A five-member team of Pennsylvania high school students from Penncrest High School, Delaware County, took 14th place in the 2010 Canon Envirothon, but received 5th Place Awards after a error by competition judges.
Winners were announced during closing ceremonies of the week-long North American environmental education competition held at California State University, Fresno (Fresno State), and sponsored by Canon U.S.A.
The Penncrest team was awarded for receiving the highest score on the Forestry test with a score of 84 points and on the current issue test with a score of 86 points.
As the result of a filed grievance, the team was penalized a 30 percent point deduction from their preliminary oral presentation score—taking them out of the top five placements.
When it was subsequently determined there was a mistake in the decision made by the grievance committee and the board of directors, the directors rewarded the Penncrest team with fifth place scholarships in the amount of $1,500. They also received the fourteenth place awards—Canon cameras.
The Pennsylvania Envirothon Board of Directors is working to have the team officially recognized as the fifth place winners tying with Maryland.
            A team from Pennsylvania has won the North American event 11 times in 21 years-- in 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2009.
The Envirothon for high school students was first organized in 1979 in the Fulton, Luzerne and Schuylkill county conservation districts and grew to include over 15,000 students in Pennsylvania and then to an international competition involving more than 45 states and nine Canadian provinces.
