The Allegheny Front: Connecting Minority Kids And The Environment

The Allegheny Front radio program this week highlights efforts to connect minority kids and the environment in two stories.
Music, Jobs Connect Minority Kids With Green Movement
Outdoors groups are trying to guide minority urban youth past the barriers that keep them from enjoying, and conserving, the natural world. Earlier this summer, the Outdoor Nation Youth Summit in New York's Central Park brought together 500 young people, about a third of whom were under age 20. The Allegheny Front's Jennifer Szweda Jordan was there. She found that some organizations are using music and jobs to get teens and young adults to go green.  Click here to listen.
Pittsburgh Groups Get Minority Kids Outside
Surveys show that those who hunt, fish or participate in outdoor recreation are overwhelmingly white. Here in Pennsylvania, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources says that only about three percent of state park visitors are from minority groups... and a recent study found that minority kids spend four-and-a-half hours more per day on electronic media than their white counterparts. Post-Gazette writer and Allegheny Front contributor Doug Oster takes a look at local efforts to get African-American kids outside.  Click here to listen.
