Environmental Heritage- DCNR At 15: Developing Pennsylvania's Hiking Trail Network

In an effort to highlight Pennsylvania’s vast hiking trail network, the agency launched an eight-day Hiking Trails Week on May 11-19, 2002.

Co-sponsored by the Keystone Trails Association, Hiking Week has since grown in scope to include well over a hundred hikes of all kinds—from midnight strolls to rugged back-packer journeys to pet hikes to hikes for persons with disabilities. Often, special events are planned throughout the week to highlight trails and the activities of trail towns.
The first annual Hiking Trails Week was the topic of the April 2002 “Nature Notes” column in resource. As the week approached, however, the weather was very much a factor: May 11 was stormy, with drought-busting rains deluging the state. After a few sunny days in the middle of the week, a powerful cold front swept in record low temperatures and snow showers on the 18th.
